Be prepared to survive
Our topic for term 3 is ‘Be prepared to survive.’ Before we knew what our topic was, Miss Waller took us for some challenges. Our first challenge was to make art out of dead plants in the nature garden. None of us were prepared even though Kiharoa had a piece of blu-tac in his pocket.
A few days later, Miss Waller said that we can play number games. Unfortunately we couldn’t find the dice and counters so we had to play a game that didn’t need them. Just as we started playing, Miss Waller shouted “It was all a trick!!!!!” First I didn’t know what she meant. But as she continued, I understood. She had hid all the dice and counters.
Since our topic was ‘Be prepared to survive’, we worked out what survival equipment was the most important and what was the least important in different situations. A few pieces of important equipment are a Swiss army knife, fire steel, saw, first aid kit and a shelter. We have done a lot of group decision making to help us decide what we would need to survive a plane crash for example.
Some parents that had survived extreme challenges came to our school to talk to us. We have learnt some survival skills like reflecting the sunlight into the sky with a mirror to make a light shine and to signal for help. We also learnt that we can survive 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food.
