Room 13's caterpillars
Mrs Raffills brought a swan plant into school for Room 13. It already had some caterpillars on it. We named the caterpillars Stripe, Nibbles, Tiny, Bites and Buggie. They are our class pets.
In this picture you can see one of our caterpillars and a chrysalis. We think it is Stripe's chrysalis and Nibbles on the leaf underneath.
Here is Nibbles getting ready to change into a chrysalis. He hung like this on the leaf all day long. Once the children had gone home and the classroom was all quiet, Nibbles finally turned into a chrysalis.
In this picture Buggie is busy turning into a chrysalis. you can see that the bottom part of his body is green and the top part still looks like a caterpillar. We found this amazing to watch!
On either side of Buggie are Tiny and Bites, they had already made their chrysalises.
Here is Nibbles climbing out of his chrysalis. He stayed hanging onto the pencil for a long time. He was drying his wings.
Mrs Raffills had to move Nibbles and Stripe off the swan plant because the other caterpillars were eating all of the leaves. We were worried that they might eat the leaves Stripe and Nibbles were hanging from. We did not want them to fall!
In this photo Peyton, Oliver and Jake are watching Nibbles climb out of his chrysalis.
Here is Emily helping Buggie outside after he had dried his wings inside the classroom.
We have loved having the caterpillars in our class. For some children, the very first thing they did in the morning when they got to school was to check what was happening on the swan plant! At the moment we have two chrysalises and one hungry caterpillar...
