Walk, Bike or Scooter to school!

Due to the congestion at our school gate and the concern to get children fit as a school our goal is to reduce the amount of cars bringing children to school. A walking school bus is a group of children who walk together to/from school with parent supervisors along a set route.  Parents take turns and shouldn’t need to walk more than one day a week.  The other 4 days are free.

The majority of children going to our school live in a 2 km radius so it’s all achievable. Therefore we are promoting walking, biking and scootering to school. Children are rewarded by being part of:

1. Walking School Buses
2. Walking or biking with a parent .
3. The senior children with parental approval are biking and walking in buddies or independently( on the footpath).
4. Rewards: Each individual can collect from Room 11 a ticket that their peer or parents sign. Each completed ticket earns a sticker on their Earth Care Tree in their class.

Walking School Buses:
We have five approved Walking School Bus routes.
  • Te Wharau
  • Tauhinu Tigers
  • Issy Lizzy-Isobel Road
  • Faith Grove Crocodiles
  • Archful Dodgers

The children have fun, socialise with other kids and arrive at school on time.  It’s also a healthy way to get to school and reduces congestion at the school gate.

If you are interested in finding out more about Walking School Buses, and would like more information, please contact Fran Morrison franm@greenhithe.school.nz

Each child has a Walking School Bus leaf which earns their class a sticker on their Earth Care Tree in their class.

Have Fun!

The Travel Wise Team of school pupils have been hard at work trying to convince the school to walk and bike to school. They have been:
  • Promoting in our whole school assembly scootering and biking with a helmet and vest.
  • Handing out The Golden Boot to the class with the most walkers or bikers for the week.
  • Handing out prizes on our Feet First Week.
  • Selecting the class with the most walkers to carry the Olympic flame around the school.
  • Awarding bag tags to children who walk 3 or more times a year.
