Principal’s News

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to term 2; it is going to be a very busy one. It was great to see the children arriving ready to learn with smiles on their faces, greeting the staff and their friends. The staff are already in the flow of teaching and making your child’s learning engaging and rich in opportunities. The classes are settled, and the children are working towards personal goals and achievements for term 2.

We would like to welcome all our new children to Greenhithe, Lucy Zheng the teacher in Room 4, and Joleen Thompson in Room 17.

Pride Values at Greenhithe School

Our PRIDE values: Perseverance, Respect, Initiative, Diligence and Excellence are important learning opportunities. We continue to refer to these during class activities and when working and playing with others. The following children have been awarded certificates: George Tian, Zyana Hsu, Olivia Long, Param Doshi and Nevaeh Pienaar.

North Shore Swimming Champs

A small team represented Greenhithe at the swimming championships this week: George Tian, Olivia Long, and Zyana Hsu. They swam with PRIDE and displayed great sportsmanship and fantastic results. Greenhithe is proud of you!! Thank you to the parents who supported the event and their children.

Teacher Only Day

Just a reminder, we will be holding a Teacher Only Day on Friday 30th May. Therefore, the school will be closed for instruction.

Parent Evening

In term 2, we will be holding a parent information evening. We are in the process of organising this evening, and it will include information on literacy and maths and the refreshed curriculum. We will also have Josie Wall from Te Kawerau ā Maki joining us to kōrero about our local iwi. This will be held in the school hall on Thursday 5th June, starting at 5:45 pm.

There is a parent meeting about navigating emotional regulation held at AJHS; please see the attached notice about this.

School Donations and Activity Contributions

We have had a great response to contributions towards school donations so far this year. THANK YOU. Please consider making your donation if you haven’t done so already.

Our Classroom Activity Contribution fees in term 2 will help pay for the external education company ‘Footsteps Dance Company.’ They will be helping the students prepare for our upcoming show in term 3. We would be most grateful if these contributions could be made as soon as possible.

Our 2025 contribution requests remain unchanged from last year and are as follows:

School Donation – $55 per term or $220 for the whole school year.  The amount for 3rd or subsequent children will remain at $37.50 per term or $150 for the whole school year.

Classroom Activity Contributions – $40 per term or $160 for the whole school year.

Kindo is our preferred method for all your school payments. If you are a new family to Greenhithe School or you were unable to set up an account last year, please find all the information you need on our school website.

Nest Consulting

From parent requests to include this important aspect of child development in our year 6 programme. Greenhithe School began these health talks with Nest Consulting, and we have now been running them for 5 years, with positive feedback from parents and children.

Nest Consulting shared information with our year 5 and 6 parents last week about puberty, social media, and emotional regulation. The year 6 children had the opportunity to have a whole-day experience with these educators this week. The children enjoyed the experience and learned more information about their growing bodies. Feedback from the children is attached.

Community Connections

Greenhithe is a MITEY School

At Greenhithe School we are mentally healthy and feel a sense of belonging when we feel respected, valued and heard. Ideas and well being are valued, ensuring that everyone feels supported and appreciated.

Time is taken to build and nurture relationships.

Through our Whānau ki te Ako, you are invited to attend an Emotional Regulation: the Key to Learning and Relationships Information Evening at Albany Junior High School. The presenter is Tami Harris from Acorn Neurodiversity.

Make sure you register for the event.

Kite-Making Takes Flight in the STEAM Classroom

Our Year 1 and 2 students have been soaring with creativity in the STEAM classroom as they explored the fascinating world of kites. Their learning journey began with an investigation into the significance of kites in Matariki celebrations and how traditional Māori kites were crafted.

They were then introduced to the science behind flight, including the forces of lift, gravity, thrust, and drag, before diving into different kite designs. With curiosity and teamwork, the children tested a variety of prototypes to decide which design would work best for their own creations.

The highlight, of course, was building their very own Matariki kites—complete with a little helping hand when needed!

Take a look at the proud faces of the children from Room 1 as they show off their beautifully made kites!

Greenhithe School PTA

Who We Are:

The Greenhithe School PTA is a passionate group of parents and teachers who work together to support the school by fundraising for much-needed items. These funds are put towards items such as playground upgrades, sports equipment and uniforms, and new resources.

We meet most months on a Tuesday from 7pm to discuss all things related to our fundraising activities and provide a forum for community feedback. Our ultimate goal is to continue to grow and nurture the great positive community we have within the school and wider Greenhithe.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate, and even if you can’t make the meeting, assisting at a PTA-supported event is super helpful!

Thanks, Sjaan and the Greenhithe PTA

Tickets are only $15 and can be purchased on Kindo. Please feel free to share this event with other parents outside of Greenhithe.

The latest fundraiser – our June calendar raffle, went home with your children this week. This is an easy fundraiser to get behind, with each calendar only $10 each, and over $3,500 of prizes to be won throughout every day in June. We encourage every family to try and sell four calendars each, with the potential to raise over $15,000 for the school.

More details about each event can be found on our Facebook page and will be sent out closer to the event dates. We welcome any new members to the PTA, just email us at greenhitheschoolpta@gmail.com to find out more.

CROSS COUNTRY

Our annual Year 3 – 6 cross country will be held at Wainoni Park on Tuesday 27th May with the saver day on Thursday 29th May. The event will start at 11am. A letter went home yesterday asking for help with walking the children down to Wainoni Park for a practice walk around the course. If you can help, please return the slip to your classroom teacher.
