Principal’s News

Term 3, Week 2 Newsletter

It was with genuine excitement that I finally stepped into the role of Principal at Greenhithe School last week. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been chosen by the Board to lead our school into its next chapter. I do understand, though, that change can sometimes bring a sense of unease. Greenhithe School already has an amazing reputation, and I’m committed to ensuring it continues to be a safe and nurturing, future-focused environment and still provides a wide and varied curriculum of learning that celebrates individuals and their own levels of excellence. Over the coming months I look forward to gaining an understanding of what your aspirations are for Greenhithe School in the future.

Importantly, I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our previous principal, Stephen Grady. He leaves a lasting legacy, and in talking with him, he is rightly proud of the school and the positive and collaborative culture he leaves behind. My sincere thanks go to the Acting Principals Kelly Knowles and Michelle Butler, who have competently and carefully guided the school for the past six months. They have worked incredibly hard, and their leadership has been invaluable in ensuring ‘business as usual’ for everyone.

I’m truly looking forward to getting to know our staff, students, and families. It has been fabulous to be out in the playground and in classrooms and to see so many smiles. To those who have already stopped by to say hello, thank you for the warm welcome! I look forward to meeting many more of you in the coming weeks as we begin this journey together.

Our PRIDE values: Perseverance, Respect, Initiative, Diligence and Excellence are important learning opportunities. We continue to refer to these during class activities and when working and playing with others. The following children have been awarded certificates: Eveline Zheng, Amelia Lay, Amber Chang, and Donghyeop Shin.

Activity Fee/School Donations

Reminders have gone out this week to those families that are still to pay their activity fee and/or school donations. Thank you to those of you who have already made paying this a priority.

Kindo is our preferred method for all your school payments. If you are a new family at Greenhithe School or you were unable to set up an account last year, please find all the information you need on our school website.

Please note the following concern shared by one of our understandably frustrated and worried neighbours…

We live by your school on Greenhithe Rd. We have a lot of trouble getting in and out of our driveway every day due to your parents parking across our drive on pickup and drop-off.

It is very dangerous for the children as we try to negotiate around the cars with oncoming traffic and children running past on the footpath. We are very worried there is going to be a serious accident unless your parents start obeying the law and not parking within a meter either side of our driveway.

I have on many occasions got out of my vehicle and asked them to please keep clear of the drive as we come and go all day, but every day there is another one doing the same thing.

So I am asking you, please, can you inform your parents to stop this bad habit before somebody is seriously injured with such a busy piece of road / path.

Following on from the above concern, Auckland Council is monitoring traffic and safety around schools. They will be issuing parking tickets for infringements such as parking on yellow dashed lines and blocking driveways and bus bays.

Please help us to keep our children safe by parking safely around our school.

Board Election Time

Help Shape Our School’s Future!

Elections for new members of our school board is here!

We’re excited to announce that our school will be holding elections to select three new community board members! This is a fantastic opportunity for passionate individuals to step into a governance role and make a real difference in the strategic direction and success of our school.

Get Involved!

Just about anyone can be on a school board. You don’t have to be a parent or caregiver of a child at Greenhithe School, just have a passion for education. Further details on how to nominate eligible candidates, and later how to vote, will be sent directly to all eligible members. Keep an eye on your inboxes for this important information.

Learn More About the Role

Serving on a school board is a rewarding experience that allows you to contribute to key decisions and initiatives that benefit our students, staff, and wider community. If you have any questions about what the role entails, please reach out to our Principal, Andrea Clarke ([email protected]), or our Presiding Member, Sam Ebel-Brown ([email protected]). You can also find valuable information on the Te Whakarōputanga Kaitiaki Kura o Aotearoa New Zealand School Boards Association website.

Community Connections

Greenhithe is a MITEY School

At Greenhithe School we are mentally healthy and feel a sense of belonging when we feel respected, valued and heard. Ideas and well being are valued, ensuring that everyone feels supported and appreciated.

Time is taken to build and nurture relationships.

Mitey Mediators

Skylar and Addie are two of our wonderful Mitey Mediators who help support our teachers in the playground. They help solve problems and teach strategies to our younger students. Thank you for being such great role models.

From the STEAM Room

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Music

Science Sparks in the STEAM Classroom!

It’s been a bubbling, fizzing, melting kind of time in the STEAM room for our Year 4, 5, and 6 students as they delved into the fascinating world of States of Matter! From solids to liquids to gases, our budding scientists have been hands-on, exploring what makes each state unique and what happens when they change from one to another.

Students investigated key processes like melting, freezing, vaporisation, condensation, and even the more mysterious sublimation. These aren’t just big words; they’re big fun when you’re learning through experimentation!

Our young experimenters practiced real scientific methods: asking questions, identifying variables, conducting fair tests, and recording results in tables and diagrams.

They had a blast, using ice, salt, and colourful dye to see how solids turn into liquids. Then, they explored how different temperatures affect how chocolate solidifies, though, to their great disappointment, this wasn’t a taste-test session!

Perhaps the most exciting part? A chemical reaction experiment with vinegar and baking soda! Using test tubes and mini balloons, students explored how changing the amount of vinegar affected the amount of gas produced and whether it could inflate a balloon. Spoiler alert: it did!

This hands-on adventure was a fantastic way for students to connect classroom learning to the real world and deepen their understanding of science through play, exploration, and a little bit of STEAM magic.

Our young scientists are just getting started! Take a look at the photos of the children from Room 19.

Who We Are:

The Greenhithe School PTA is a passionate group of parents and teachers who work together to support the school by fundraising for much-needed items. These funds are put towards items such as playground upgrades, sports equipment and uniforms, and new resources.

We meet most months on a Tuesday from 7pm to discuss all things related to our fundraising activities and provide a forum for community feedback. Our ultimate goal is to continue to grow and nurture the great positive community we have within the school and wider Greenhithe.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate, and even if you can’t make the meeting, assisting at a PTA-supported event is super helpful!

Thanks, Sjaan and the Greenhithe PTA
