Principal’s News

Dear Parents,

A busy couple of weeks are coming up at Greenhithe. We have our school Cross Country at Wainoni Park for year 3-6 children, the first Rippa tournament, and Footsteps teaching our children dance. We have a Teachers’ Only Day on 30th May, the school will be closed for instruction. Our teachers will be upskilling on the Refreshed Curriculum for the day. A letter came home last Friday inviting you to an information evening about the refreshed curriculum. Please ensure that you complete the attendance slip, as we will be providing some kai (see below for more information).

Every two years, our school consults with its community on aspects of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum at Greenhithe School. We would like you to identify how important you consider each item to be. Your responses will help us to make decisions about how much emphasis is placed on different aspects of the programme. The Health and Physical Education survey was sent out to parents via email on Wednesday 20th May. Please complete the survey by 6th June. Alternatively, you can complete the survey by clicking on this link: Health and P.E. Survey 2025.

Ensure you keep up with the events happening at our school through the website and the PTA Facebook page so you do not miss anything.

The PTA has been busy already this term with the great idea of House T Shirts, which we will see at the Cross Country, and the Calendar Raffle, in June. The information evening from Jo Robertson was a huge success, with over 100 tickets sold. A huge thank you to our PTA and our community for supporting Greenhithe School and learning about keeping our children safe in the wider world.

Just a reminder that cards are not allowed, e.g., Pokémon, at school, as this has a tendency to cause problems amongst our students with regard to trading them. So please keep them at home.

Pride Values at Greenhithe School

Our PRIDE values: Perseverance, Respect, Initiative, Diligence and Excellence are important learning opportunities. We continue to refer to these during class activities and when working and playing with others. The following children have been awarded certificates: Anson Ma, Blake Cheeseman, Lena Rahmati, Naomi Wang, Jonah Ohlson, Nora Otroj Dylan Sun, and Jake MacGregor.

.Kai, Kōrero and Curriculum Evening

Another reminder: we will be holding a parent information evening. It will include information on literacy and maths and the refreshed curriculum. We will also have Josie Wall from Te Kawerau ā Maki joining us to kōrero about our local iwi. This will be held in the school hall on Thursday 5th June starting at 5:45 pm. A letter went home Friday 16th May with information about the evening. If you intend to come, please complete the slip at the end of the letter and return it to the school so we can provide nibbles.

School Donations and Activity Contributions

We have had a great response to contributions towards school donations so far this year. THANK YOU. Please consider making your donation if you haven’t done so already.

Our Classroom Activity Contribution fees in term 2 will help pay for the external education company ‘Footsteps Dance Company.’ They will be helping the students prepare for our upcoming show in term 3. We would be most grateful if these contributions could be made.

Our 2025 contribution requests remain unchanged from last year and are as follows:

School Donation – $55 per term or $220 for the whole school year.  The amount for 3rd or subsequent children will remain at $37.50 per term or $150 for the whole school year.

Classroom Activity Contributions – $40 per term or $160 for the whole school year.

Kindo is our preferred method for all your school payments. If you are a new family to Greenhithe School or you were unable to set up an account last year, please find all the information you need on our school website.

Community Connections

Greenhithe is a MITEY School

At Greenhithe School we are mentally healthy and feel a sense of belonging when we feel respected, valued and heard. Ideas and well being are valued, ensuring that everyone feels supported and appreciated.

Time is taken to build and nurture relationships.

Mitey certificates were awarded this week to two of our Mitey Mediators who are doing an amazing job coaching our younger students in the playground.

Kaitiaki are back!

Welcome back to our Kaitaiki of 2025. Some year 4 students have been busy with Mrs. Butler tidying our school environment. Ensuring our habitat areas are safe, birds are fed and the veggie garden is tidy and ready to sow.

We have birdhouses, a lizard lounge, a butterfly house, weta hotels, a bug palace, and a birdbath. Our next project is a log pile habitat for all the creepy crawlies. Watch this space as we build another home for our creatures at Greenhithe.

Plastic Inquiry in the STEAM Classroom

In Term 1, our Year 6 students launched into a STEAM inquiry exploring the world of plastic. They investigated different types of plastic, their properties, and where they are commonly found in everyday items. A class audit of lunchbox waste revealed just how much soft plastic we use, prompting important conversations about habits and sustainability.

As part of their learning, students analysed the pros and cons of plastic and examined how its disposal is affecting our environment. They explored innovations that help clean polluted water and took a closer look at microplastics—tiny but harmful particles that end up in oceans and waterways. A highlight was a hands-on STEAM challenge to remove microplastics from water using a limited set of materials. This required students to plan, build, test, and revise their designs while working collaboratively—a true test of creativity and critical thinking.

In Term 2, the inquiry continues with a focus on solutions. Students are learning how to reduce, reuse, and recycle plastic in practical ways. Their new STEAM challenge involves designing and constructing kites for Matariki using recycled soft plastics, string, tape, and bamboo skewers. Before building, students explored the science of flight—learning about lift, gravity, thrust, and drag—and studied various kite designs to inspire their own.

This project encourages innovation and sustainability while giving students the chance to celebrate Matariki through a fun, hands-on activity that brings science and creativity together.

Take a look at some of the highlights from the children in Room 22.

Who We Are:

The Greenhithe School PTA is a passionate group of parents and teachers who work together to support the school by fundraising for much-needed items. These funds are put towards items such as playground upgrades, sports equipment and uniforms, and new resources.

We meet most months on a Tuesday from 7pm to discuss all things related to our fundraising activities and provide a forum for community feedback. Our ultimate goal is to continue to grow and nurture the great positive community we have within the school and wider Greenhithe.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate, and even if you can’t make the meeting, assisting at a PTA-supported event is super helpful!

Thanks, Sjaan and the Greenhithe PTA
